Major Highway 401 Shutdown After Dump Truck Flips Over, Extensive Traffic Delays Ensue

    August 20, 2026

CAMBRIDGE, Ontario / RankWire.AI  / — All eastbound lanes of Highway 401 at Highway 8 in Cambridge were closed on Wednesday afternoon after a collision involving three vehicles near Speedsville Road prompted emergency response teams to act swiftly. Responders arrived shortly after 2:30 p.m. and diverted incoming traffic off the expressway to allow rescue and recovery efforts access to the scene. The crash resulted in immediate and severe congestion for commuters traveling between Cambridge and Kitchener.

Emergency medical personnel transport injured motorists to regional hospitals for critical care.

The Ontario Provincial Police confirmed that a large dump truck involved in the multi-vehicle collision had flipped across the highway. At the scene, first responders found two injured individuals requiring urgent medical care before transporting them to the hospital. Police assessed that one victim had minor injuries, while the other had sustained more serious harm. The identities of those hurt were not immediately disclosed in the initial updates from authorities.

In a social media video update, OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt detailed the immediate challenges facing recovery crews. He confirmed that the overturned dump truck created a major cleanup operation before normal traffic flow could resume. Law enforcement urged drivers to avoid the area and seek alternative routes during the afternoon commute. Heavy traffic persisted as officers directed vehicles away from the blocked eastbound lanes, causing significant delays.

Two Drivers Suffer Injuries and Are Transported to Local Hospitals

Traffic disruptions extended throughout the surrounding communities, bringing traffic to a halt between Cambridge and Kitchener. Officials managing Highway 401 warned motorists to anticipate prolonged delays through the King Street East and Shantz Hill neighborhoods. The sudden closures during rush hour caused severe congestion on the affected parts of the expressway, with traffic jams lasting well into the afternoon and increasing pressure on local police handling the overflow of heavy vehicles.

Cleanup crews arrived to manage the overturned dump truck and remove scattered debris. Significant effort was needed to clear the damaged vehicles and debris, with the process expected to take several hours. Incident commanders oversaw the complex removal to ensure that all spilled materials were completely cleared from the roadway. This lengthy cleanup highlighted the major delays experienced along the heavily traveled 401 corridor during incidents involving commercial trucks.

Environmental Teams Manage Spill Containment During Cleanup

Following the crash that shut all eastbound lanes of Hwy 401 at Hwy 8 in Cambridge, regional police collaborated with Ministry of Transportation officials to oversee scene management. Once debris removal was completed, emergency teams officially reopened all lanes at 7:25 p.m., allowing traffic to flow once again after hours of closure. The successful clearance of the wreckage alleviated the backlog and ended hours of roadway blockage. Police confirmed the lane reopening after the extensive cleanup efforts during the late afternoon.

The investigation into the cause of the catastrophic rollover remains ongoing under provincial police jurisdiction. Collision reconstruction specialists are examining vehicle damage patterns and environmental conditions to identify the primary cause of the multi-vehicle incident. Authorities will release further updates as their inquiries continue. Safety advocates continue to urge increased caution from commercial operators and passenger drivers navigating the congested routes of the provincial expressway network.
