Ontario to Lift Travel Restrictions and Fire Zone, Authorities Announce

    August 21, 2026

THUNDER BAY, Ontario / RankWire.AI / — Following significant rainfall and a decrease in wildfire activity, the Ministry of Natural Resources has confirmed the removal of a regional restricted fire zone and travel ban across Northwestern Ontario. Official statements from provincial forestry officials indicated that emergency orders banning open fires and backcountry access were rescinded at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday. This move brings an end to weeks of strict outdoor burning restrictions aimed at reducing extreme fire risks in the region.

Officials from provincial fire management announced that valid burning permits are once again in effect, allowing campfires, recreational burning, and fireworks under standard safety rules. In Thunder Bay, municipal authorities confirmed that local fire bans would also be lifted at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, though residents are reminded that municipal permits are still required for open fires. The decision to lift restrictions was largely driven by cooler weather and widespread rain, which have greatly diminished the available fuel for fires.

Travel Restrictions and Fire Zone Reinstated in Northwestern Ontario

Simultaneously with the ending of burning bans, emergency coordinators lifted localized access restrictions in the Armstrong and Whitesand First Nation regions. Transportation agencies confirmed that major highways, such as Highway 527 and Highway 811, are now fully open to the public. These reopenings enable residents displaced by the fires to return home and allow for the resumption of routine commercial operations and recreational travel along primary routes.

Ontario Forest Fires tracking systems reported that orders related to large fire complexes, including Thunder Bay 36 and Dryden 34, were lifted at 9:00 a.m. Thursday. Evacuation alerts previously issued for the Fort Frances 39 area near the United States border have also been canceled following assessments that active suppression efforts successfully contained the threats around these zones.

Restrictions in the Regional Fire Zone Officially Removed Thursday Morning

Although the regional bans have been lifted, provincial fire officials stressed that wildfire suppression crews continue to operate on remaining remote fires. Emergency responders warned that while immediate safety threats have decreased, the public should remain cautious when lighting outdoor fires, especially on dry terrain. Monitoring groups will persist in observing humidity levels and lightning activity to adapt hazard ratings throughout the rest of the fire season.

Officials from northern municipalities affected by the restrictions expressed satisfaction with the rescission of emergency measures, highlighting that renewed access supports local outfitters and tourism businesses. The provincial government extended thanks to residents and visitors for following safety protocols during the height of the fire danger. As the measures to lift the fire zone and travel bans take full effect, authorities continue to remind all outdoor enthusiasts to comply with provincial fire safety regulations.
